Burbank-based visual effects house Origin Digital Studios launched in 2014. Led by Emmy –nominated visual effects executive Mark Miller, the company has achieved quick success by tapping into L.A.’s deep visual effects talent pool and boom in television production. Current projects include such hits as Fox’s Sleepy Hollow, CBS’s Limitless and AMC’s The Walking Dead. Origin has thrived by pursuing a unique business model that combines the nimbleness of a creative boutique with the muscle of a national powerhouse.
Its IT infrastructure was initially provided by GPL Technologies as a complete, turnkey solution. GPL engineers worked with Origin staff in designing the visual effects pipeline and supplied all of the artist workstations, rendering gear, storage systems, and other hardware and software components. Additionally, it provides pipeline management and technical support on a 365/24/7 basis.
“In the past, the only way for a company like ours to go into business was to hire an IT department, purchase the hardware and software, integrate the systems and then fight technical issues for months,” notes Miller. “With GPL, I simply told them what we were going to do and how we needed help. The response was immediate. They supplied all of the hardware and software on a rental basis and integrated everything into our facility and data center. They trained our staff and off we went. We were in business in less than two weeks.”
Origin currently operates facilities in Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta. GPL worked with Origin’s in-house pipeline team to integrate the company’s New York infrastructure with the server and render farm system of the ad agency Eyeball. The result is a streamlined workflow that ensures all of the company’s divisions remain in sync.
GPL not only allowed Origin to get up and running fast, it helped the company keep overhead costs low. “The pricing on hardware was unbeatable,” says Miller. “GPL’s staff are personable, they understand our business and they provide incredible tech support. GPL is unlike any other service company.”
